Fiorentina 0, Milan 1: Miracle in Florence

I wasn’t sure Milan would be up to the task given their performances the past two and a half months or so, but somehow, they put in about 30 improved minutes of football and that was enough to take home all three points from Florence today. Which was a miracle for fans and also for the fact that we have often struggled to win in their house. Because we have left our fate in the hands of other teams, it’s impossible to know if this was enough. But being arguably our toughest match of our final three, it is a big sigh of relief to get the win. In fact, it’s a bit of a miracle.

Miracles do exist

Fiorentina came out shooting, testing Gigio early, but at about the 20 minute mark, Milan seemed to realize that this team hadn’t won in twelve league matches and were being coached by Montella. Suso became the lethal weapon version of himself, and Calhanoglu followed suit, so it’s no surprise that Calhanoglu scored an amazing header from an amazing Suso cross in the 35th. 1-0 Milan. Both have been unfairly criticized by Milan “fans” all season, so it was great to see them score. Not that it will change the way the fans view them or hate them, but Suso’s tenth assist on the season does call into question the validity of the fans’ claims anyway.

Hero or zero? Ask social media. Pathological keyboard warriors can't possibly be wrong

Other than that, it was business as usual for Milan, or what we have unfortunately come to expect this last part of the season. There were some brilliant saves from both keepers, some nice strikes, and a clash of heads left Borini down late in the game. He was definitely bleeding, whether or not he lost consciousness I don’t know as of this writing, the players immediately called for medical help. But hopefully he is on the mend soon so that he can continue to do whatever it is that he is supposed to be doing at Milan.

A long awaited and very deserved goal

I feel for Fiorentina, not only for this loss, but for their continued poor form and for owners who have continually not done what was good for the club. We can definitely relate to that. Also because they are stuck with Montella, that’s really the worst. It kind of puts into perspective our self-pity of being in fifth place with two games left, and complaining about a coach who took over from Montella and has gotten us to higher places than l’Aeroplanino ever could have. Despite our sincere desire (and for some, entitlement) to achieve Champions League qualification, for today, I am grateful for the miracle in Florence.
